Winter in the Atlanta area isn't brutal like up north, but it still does real damage to homes that aren't prepared. Freeze-thaw cycles, wet weather, and dropping temps hit painted surfaces, floors, and caulk lines harder than most homeowners expect. Here's what we look at before the cold sets in.
If your exterior paint is peeling, cracked, or chalking, water is already finding its way in. Once temps drop below 50 degrees, you can't paint — most latex paints, including Sherwin-Williams Duration and Benjamin Moore Aura Exterior, require a minimum of 35-50°F to cure properly, but quality work really needs consistent temps above 50. That means now, in early fall, is your window.
Caulk around windows, door frames, and trim joints is equally important. Old caulk shrinks and cracks over time. We use Sherwin-Williams Loxon or NPC Solar Seal depending on the substrate — both hold up well through Georgia's temperature swings. A bad caulk line lets moisture in behind the paint film, and by spring you're dealing with peeling and wood rot.
If you're in Lawrenceville, Duluth, Norcross, or anywhere in Gwinnett County, get this looked at before November hits.
Winter is actually a solid time for interior work. Windows stay closed, humidity is lower inside, and paint dries consistently. If you've been putting off repainting bedrooms, a main living area, or a bathroom, the cooler months are when we get it done without the heat and humidity complications of a Georgia summer.
We typically use Sherwin-Williams Emerald or Benjamin Moore Regal Select for interior walls — both have low odor and hold up well in high-traffic areas. For bathrooms and kitchens we go with their mold-resistant formulas. It's not glamorous, but it matters.
If you have hardwood floors, fall is the time to look closely at the boards near exterior doors and windows. Gaps, cupping, or soft spots in the wood are signs moisture has been getting in. Addressing it now, before another wet season, keeps a refinish job from turning into a full replacement.
For homes getting new LVP (luxury vinyl plank) or tile installed, winter is fine — these materials don't have the acclimation requirements that solid hardwood does. We work regularly in Lawrenceville 30043, 30044, and 30046 zip codes, and throughout Gwinnett into Roswell and Sandy Springs.
Subfloor condition matters more than most people realize. We always check for soft spots, squeaks, and level issues before laying anything down. Skipping that step is how you end up with a floor that fails in two years.
When you reach out to RUHEAD LLC, we come out, walk the property, and tell you straight what needs attention before winter and what can wait. No pressure to do everything at once — just an honest look at what's going to protect your investment.
We've been doing this in Metro Atlanta and Gwinnett County since 2012. We're licensed, and we do the work ourselves — not a revolving door of subs. If you want to get on the schedule before the cold weather window closes, now is the time to call.
